From Zero to Active

Sometimes It’s Hard to Get Started!

One way to kick-start a new fitness routine, especially for those going from zero activity to light exercise, is to start the morning with a moderate run. It doesn’t require a gym membership or a trainer. And it’s an invigorating way to begin your day.

Need help getting motivated? Try this. Keep your running shoes next to your bed, as a daily reminder. Set your alarm 30 minutes earlier than normal. Start by jogging for just 10 minutes, then gradually extend the time you spend running. Push to 30 minutes, or even 45 minutes.

Jogging 30 minutes or more feeds extra oxygen to the brain, which improves mood and brain health; plus, it can protect against Alzheimer’s. Carrying light weights as you jog will increase the benefit to your arms and upper body.

The modest pace of jogging serves as a perfect warm-up. As you advance in your training, add some other light exercises before or after your jog—or, after finishing your run, go straight to a more vigorous workout to further improve your strength and balance.

In the meantime, just a simple morning jog will create noticeable improvements to your overall health.
